Makeready
The set up work and test sheets needed to bring a press to saleable print quality before the run starts.
Preflight
The automated and manual check of supplied artwork for size, bleed, resolution, fonts and colour before it is imposed.
Imposition
The arrangement of pages on the press sheet so that they fold and trim into the correct order.
Bleed
Artwork extended beyond the trim edge, usually by three millimetres, so no white edge shows after cutting.
Contract proof
A colour managed proof that the client approves and the press matches to.
Crash lock base
A carton base that locks itself when the carton is squared up, common in retail packaging.
Light curtain
A safety device on a guillotine or press that stops the machine when a beam of light across the danger zone is broken.
Lockout
Isolating a machine's energy source and applying a personal lock so it cannot be restarted while someone is working on it.
Non-conformance
Product or process output that does not meet the specification, recorded so its cause can be fixed.
Safety data sheet
The supplier's document describing a chemical's hazards, handling, storage, first aid and disposal requirements.
